NEW SPEED CONTROLLER FOR AC INDUCTION MOTORS

FE Series Speed Controller for Three-Phase AC Induction Motors
 
The new FE Series speed controller is specially designed for use with Oriental Motor's three-phase AC induction motors. Easy speed control can be achieved by simply connecting the speed controller to the motor and setting the required output power. The specified speed can be displayed digitally in either frequency (Hz) or revolutions (r/min).
In addition, the FE Series speed controller offers a wide range of features:
  • nDigital Display
    ØIndicates commanded speed (frequency or rpm) and alarm code.
  • Easy Operation
    ØThe speed can be set easily with the potentiometer on the front panel. 0-10 VDC external voltage speed setting is available as well. 
  • Easy Setting
    The speed controller parameters have been set for the various motors in advance, so its performance can maximized at both low and high speeds.
  • Speed Setting range: 200~2400 r/min, 6.6~80 Hz
  • Individual Accel/Decel Settings

Oriental Motor announces the addition of our 200 & 400 W (1/4 & 1/2 HP) motors to the BLF Series. The BLF Series combines the attractive features of a brushless DC motor, such as compact size, high output, flat torque, excellent speed stability and energy-saving design, with exciting new enhancements that include a wider speed range and multi-speed operation. Using the digital operator, you can draw the maximum performance out of this feature rich BLF Series with ease.
  • 30 W (1/25 HP), 60 W (1/12 HP), 120 W (1/6 HP), 200 W (1/4 HP) and 400 W (1/2 HP) motors.
  • A wide speed control range from 80 to 4000 r/min
  • The driver features 4 speed setting methods; internal potentiometer, digital operator, external potentiometer and external DC voltage (0 to 5VDC or 0 to 10VDC)
  • The digital operator supports 3 display modes;

The digital operator, which serves as both a data setting unit and a display, can be detached from the driver and used at a location as far as 5 m (16.4 ft.) away using an optional remote-control kit. New Expanded BX Series BLDC Speed Control Systems
 
Oriental Motor announces the expansion of our BX Series BLDC speed control systems.  The new systems are RoHS-compliant and feature the new high-power, long-life parallel shaft and flat hollow shaft gearheads. The new gearheads have a rated life of 10,000 hours (twice that of our standard gearheads).
The BX Series brushless DC motor and driver packages offer high performance and high function.
  • 30 W (1/25 HP), 60 W (1/12 HP), 120 W (1/6 HP), 200 W (1/4 HP) and 400 W (1/2 HP) motors.
  • Wide speed range, flat torque
    The BX Series offers a wide speed range of 30 to 3000 r/min.  Even with load fluctuations, the speed ratio is 1 to 100 without any reduction in torque.
  • Great Speed Regulation
    The BX Series offers highly accurate speed control, achieving an excellent speed regulation with respect to load (± 0.05%), voltage (±0.05%) and temperature (± 0.5%). 
  • Easy-to-set speed control using an internal potentiometer, external potentiometer or external DC voltage (0 to 5VDC)

Speed Control during Vertical Drive
The motor with an electromagnetic brake enables stable speed control even during vertical drive (gravitational operation). When the power is turned off, the motor stops instantly to hold the load in place. The electromagnetic brake is automatically controlled via the driver in accordance with ON/OFF of the operation command signal.

The Control Module allows for a speed control range of 3 ~ 3000 r/min versus the standard range of 30 ~ 3000 r/min using Digital Setting.
Control Module
 
You can extend the functions of the BX Series using an optional control module (OPX-1A). When using with a control module, the BX Series provides the torque limiting, position control and other extended functions:
  • Speed setting (up to 8 speeds)
  • Speed range of 3 ~ 3000 r/min
  • Improved speed control accuracy (± 0.5% > ± 0.05% with respect to temperature)
  • Setting of positioning operation data (up to 6 data settings)
  • Torque limit setting
  • Various displays
    OPX-1A: Speed (r/min), position counter (STEP), load factor (%), alarm codes, alarm history

Q:  Are there any concerns using Speed Control products for a vertical application?
 
A:
Two situations generally need to be considered.  The first one is how to hold the load under unexpected power down situation. The motor will lose its torque if it loses the input power.  This may cause the load moving downward due to gravitational force unless there is enough friction or system loss (low efficiency).  However, if you design a system to have large friction or low efficiency, you may need to size the motor larger.  The system friction or efficiency may change after a period of operation. Therefore a magnetic brake motor is recommended for vertical application.
 
 

The second concern is how to handle the back EMF, Electro-Magnetic-Field generated during downward operation. The motor has its magnetic field because of the winding in the stator. If the motor is back driven by an external force, which is the gravitational force in this case, it generates a back EMF. This causes extra energy feedback to the controller and it may damage the controller. The gravitational force also pushes the motor speed to run faster. If the speed is pushed faster than the permissible speed, then, the driver senses it as an abnormal situation, and alarms out. Therefore, it is recommended to use a driver which can handle back EMF for vertical applications.

With considering the two situations, Oriental Motor recommends the two product types; the BX brushless DC speed control series and the BHF AC speed control series. These series has the options for electromagnetic brake preassembled on the motor and the separate regeneration unit to use with the controller.


 
Q: I want to control the speed of two motors to be the same. I need to control the speed on both sides of the conveyor. How do I do this and what products do you recommend?
 
A: There are several products that can do parallel operation with different ways to control the speed.  The following are some examples which may vary depending on the product.  To select the best product for your application, please contact the Technical Support for assistance.
