Linear Motors from Oriental Motor: Lead Times Make the Difference
 |
More than ever, time is money. And the more you save of both, the better your bottom line. From lead time, to design time, to cycle time, Oriental Motor’s motorized linear actuator line saves you time on all fronts. Oriental Motor’s newly expanded linear lineup of five different series and nearly 1000 actuators maintains excellence in performance and delivery within seven business days. But the time savings doesn’t stop there.
Cutting Down on Design Time
Designing a linear motion system takes countless hours of design time to ensure proper function and lifetime. When designing an actuator, speed, stroke length, transportable mass, thrust force, accuracy, and moment loads must be considered. Although speed may be an easy calculation, determining the transportable mass, thrust force, and moment loads requires an experienced linear motion designer. Using a motorized linear actuator from Oriental Motor eliminates the need to calculate these values because proven specifications have already been verified and tested by the design engineers at Oriental Motor.
Among the design factors considered, moment load is one of the more difficult calculations because both static and dynamic situations must be calculated. Considering moment loads is important because excessive moments can cause permanent deformation to the guide rails or balls inside the ball screws.
Accuracy can suffer and higher noise can be heard when the actuator has been damaged from excessive moment loading. Compared to other system components, linear guide life is the limiting factor. Calculating the moment load helps confirm that the linear guide’s rated life can be achieved under the user’s operating conditions. Every actuator will have moment load limitations listed in the specifications. If you’re unsure of your moment load limitation, the engineers at Oriental Motor can help determine if your application falls within these specifications.
Cutting Down on Cycle Time

Another important component of a motorized linear actuator is the motor that drives the screw or belt. The drive motor for all of the actuators listed is the closed loop Alpha Step motor. The Alpha Step is ideal for quick, high-response moves with no gain tuning required. The Alpha Step also utilizes a unique closed loop control to maintain positioning operation even during abrupt load fluctuations and accelerations. A resolver, which is built into the back of the motor, monitors the rotation at all times by analyzing the varying winding inductance. When an overload condition is detected, it will instantaneously regain control using the closed loop mode. If an overload condition continues, an alarm signal will be output. The closed loop function of the Alpha Step motor is monitored inside the controller for the actuator. All of the actuators use the same controller and can be controlled by sending pulse and direction (driver mode) or by executing one of the sixty-three motion profiles that can be stored in the controller using software or a teaching pendant (controller mode).
The Alpha Step motor’s design allows it to offer the highest torque per volume by allowing current to flow through 100% of the windings. This combined with its closed loop function allows for very quick acceleration and deceleration, which makes short, quick movements possible at a faster rate than other motors can offer. Fast cycle times and high production will result from this design. Positioning distance vs. positioning time charts are provided for each actuator, making it very easy to get a general idea about actuator performance.
Oriental Motor: Delivering Value Every Time
In a world where time is everything, Oriental Motor’s expanded linear actuator lineup does its part in saving whatever time is possible through its short lead time, expedited design time, and quick cycle times.

SCX10 Universal Controller: USB Interface Ensures Product’s Universality

|
For anyone who’s ever had a cell phone, one of the largest hassles you can attest to is being stuck without a charger when your battery is dying. It’s not as if you can borrow your friend or colleague’s charger to juice up your battery — they have an iPhone while you have a Blackberry and the two ports just aren’t compatible. |
| And the local cell phone store in your area just happens to not be your provider and therefore doesn’t carry your particular model of phone. In other words, you’re stuck. This one-size-does-not-fit-all trend isn't familiar just to the cell phone industry (television remotes anyone?). For many years, motion control manufacturers would require users to purchase connectors specific to their products, and specifically for motion controllers. But with the introduction of the universal SCX10 motion controller from Oriental Motor, users now have the freedom to operate the controller with any motor via a simple USB interface.
USB Ensures Universality
By creating a controller that utilizes an internationally recognized periphery standard, the SCX10 universal controller ensures its compatibility with multiple motors and consistency across wide-spread and international applications. The SCX10 universal controller also simplifies the
Fun fact: Over 2 billion USB cables are sold every year.
planning process for buyers coordinating international or large-scale plants and factories. In addition to a USB port, the SCX10 universal controller can also connect to the motor via various serial communication protocols such as RS-232C and CANopen, giving users more options and flexibility than ever.
Four Interfaces for Operation and Software Included
The various connectivity options for the SCX10 universal controller gives users the ability to program sequence commands through four different interfaces: stand-alone operation using sensors and switches, direct command via CANopen, operation via a PC or programmable controller.
The SCX10 controller comes supplied with the easy-to-use "Immediate Motion Creator for CM/SCX Series" software for the PC. The software allows for ease of program creation by selecting system commands and start of operation with the click of a simple start key. The program also provides functions such as real time monitor for the teaching position, current position and I/O status, system parameter setting, oscilloscope function and I/O assignment.
Fun fact: 88% of computer users operate on a PC platform.
Additionally, the SCX10 can store a whopping 100 sequence programs internally and execute various operations, from simple movements like "repeated positioning operation" to complicated controls like "operation by calculating the
value based on external inputs".
Additional Features of the SCX 10 Designed for Multiple Motion Control Scenarios
The SCX10 was designed to consider a broad spectrum of different motion control scenarios. For that reason, the SCX10 universal controller also has a function for external encoder inputs for users who need to continually monitor feedback position and position error. Compatible inputs are line driver, open collector and TTL inputs.
The controller also comes equipped with Intelligent Setting, allowing users to program data for speed and travel amount as the unit of actual motion such as "mm", "inch" and "revolution".
360°Of Inclusion:
If you are looking to simplify your manufacturing process or need to provide your users with a simplified means of creating motion control, the SCX10 universal controller can ensure consistency between hardware, software and your various user groups. Until all of the world's electronics can have a simplified means of connectivity, the universality of the SCX10 controller can help simplify at least a portion of your daily technological interactions.
