AS Series closed loop stepping motors0.36° Closed Loop Stepping Motor and Driver with Built-in Controller Packages - AS Series

The AlphaStep with Built-in Controller offers the simplicity of a stepping motor with closed loop control and the added simplicity of a built-in controller. Using Oriental Motor's closed loop control, the AlphaStep with Built-in Controller uses a built-in feedback device that constantly monitors the motor shaft position to detect and correct for loss of synchronism even during abrupt load fluctuations and accelerations. The built-in controller driver has an integrated controller which ensures a simple, efficient solution and is computer-programmable via an RS-232C connection.

The AlphaStep with Built-in Controller features frame sizes from 1.65 in. (42mm) up to 3.54 in. (90mm) available with a wide range of gear options and electromagnetic brake. The driver is available in three power supply voltages; Single-Phase 100-115 VAC, Single-Phase 200-230 VAC and Three-Phase 200-230 VAC.

Closed Loop Performance

The AlphaStep utilizes our unique closed loop control to maintain positioning operation even during abrupt load fluctuations and accelerations. The rotor position detection sensor monitors the rotation. When an overload condition is detected, it will instantaneously regain control using the closed loop mode.

When an overload condition continues it will output an alarm signal, thereby providing reliability equal to that of a servo motor.

Control Diagram

The Sensor to Detect Rotor's Position

The AlphaStep rotor position detection sensor uses the change in inductance caused by change in the distance between the stator teeth and the teeth on the sensor rotor to detect rotor position.

  • This structure can be made small and thin, so the overall size of the motor can be reduced
  • High resolution
  • This structure does not use electronic parts, so it is not affected by heat or vibration

No Gain Tuning

Gain tuning for servo motors is critical, troublesome and time-consuming. Since the AlphaStep operates like a stepping motor, there are no gain tuning requirements. AlphaStep is ideal for low rigidity applications, such as belt and pulley systems.

No Gain Tuning

No Hunting

Since AlphaStep is a stepping motor, it does not have a hunting problem. Therefore, when it stops, its position is completely stable and does not fluctuate. AlphaStep is ideal for applications in which hunting would be a problem.

No Hunting

High Response

Like conventional stepping motors, AlphaStep operates in synchronism with command pulses. This makes short stroke positioning possible in a short amount of time.

High Response

Low Vibration at Low Speed

The driver employs advanced technology that produces smoothness comparable to a microstep driver. Its vibration level is incredibly low, even when operating in the low speed range. When frequent changes from low to high (or vice versa) speed operations are required, the use of the Resolution Select Function solves the problem. AlphaStep provides resolution as high as 0.036° per step without any damping mechanism or other mechanical device.

Low Vibration

Motor / Driver Connection with a Single Cable

AlphaStep only requires one cable for connection between the motor and the driver. Wiring is much simpler compared with conventional servo motors requiring two cables, one for motor and the other for encoder. The cable can be extended to a maximum of 20 m (65.6 ft.) [10 m (32.8 ft.) for flexible extension cable], so the motor and the driver can be installed in locations far apart.

Built-in Controller

Features of the Built-in Controller Package

The built-in controller driver has an integrated controller which ensures a simple, efficient solution for stepping motor applications. The built-in pulse generation function allows the motor to be driven via a directly connected programmable controller or PC. Since no separate pulse generator is required, the driver with built-in controller saves space, simplifies wiring and also allows the number of axes to be increased with ease.

The built-in controller driver has an integrated controller which ensures a simple, efficient solution and is computer-programmable via an RS-232C connection.

System Configuration

Build a complete system online by selecting your base motor and driver and adding all necessary accessories.

Build a System

Couplings / Brackets

Flexible Couplings

Motor Cables

This three-piece coupling adopts an aluminum alloy hub and a resin spider. The simple construction ensures that the high torque generated by a gear motor can be transmitted reliably. The proper elasticity of the spider suppresses motor vibration.

Motor Mounting Brackets

Mounting Bracket

Mounting brackets are convenient for installation and securing a stepping motor or geared stepping motor.

Cables / Connectors

Driver Cable

Driver Cable

This is a shielded cable equipped with a half-pitch connector at one end of the cable that snaps onto the driver. The other end is laminated lead wires aligned in order at a pitch of 0.05 in. (1.27 mm), which is convenient for insulation displacement connectors.

Connector - Terminal Block Unit

Terminal Block Unit

A terminal block conversion unit connects a driver to a host controller.

Communication Cable

Communication Cable

A 16.4 ft. (5 m) cable with a D-sub 9 connector one end for the RS-232C communications between the PC and the AS Series built-in controller type driver.

Motor Extension Cables

Extension Cables

These cables extend the distance between the motor and driver. The motor includes a 1.31 ft. (400 mm) cable. Use a flexible motor cable if the motor is installed on a moving part or its cable will be flexed.

Motor Cable for Industrial Connector Type Motor (required for Industrial Connector type motors)

Industrial Connector Cable

These motor cables must be used for connection between the industrial connector type motor and the driver. Any industrial connector type motor cannot be driven without these cables.

One end of the cable connects to the metal connector on the motor while the other end connects to the driver. Use a flexible motor cable if the motor is installed on a moving part or its cable will be flexed.

DIN Rail Mounting Plate

DIN Rail Mounting Plate

This mounting plate is convenient for installing the driver on DIN rails with ease.
